I. Horizon 2020
Horizon 2020 is the 2014-2020 EU funding programme for Research and Innovation. It covers the whole research and innovation value chain, from big international collaborative research projects to smaller projects with a clear view on the market. Thematic work programmes set the priority topics for 2 years and every year calls for proposals are open for these pre-defined research and innovation topics. For topics falling under the SME instrument or the Fast Track to Innovation, calls for proposals are continously open with 3 or 4 cut-off dates per year.
Under Horizon 2020, Transport stakeholders are addressed mostly in the work Programmes of the following Societal Challenges:
- Societal Challenge 4 "Smart, Green and Integrated Transport" (Aviation, rail, road, waterborne, urban mobility, logistics, intelligent transport, infrastructure and green vehicles).
Calls for proposals from other societal challenges might be of interest for the transport sector, in particular:
- Societal Challenge 3 “Secure, Clean and Efficient Energy” offers opportunities for integrated solutions in the smart cities and communities related topics

The transport sector will also find funding opportunities in the pillar "Leadership in enabling and industrial technologies" (LEIT) and in particular in the work programmes related to the following sectors:
EUROSTARS is a transnational funding scheme from the EUREKA Programme. SHIFT²RAIL will be the first European rail joint technology initiative to seek focused research and innovation (R&I) and market-driven solutions by accelerating the integration of new and advanced technologies into innovative rail product solutions. SHIFT²RAIL will promote the competitiveness of the European Rail Industry and will meet the changing EU transport needs.
CONNECTING EUROPE FACILITY (CEF)
The Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) finances projects which fill the missing links in Europe's energy, transport and digital backbone. It will also make Europe's economy greener by promoting cleaner transport modes, high speed broadband connections and facilitating the use of renewable energy in line with the Europe 2020 Strategy.
