Horizon 2020: three new Horizon Prices for energy innovation

Horizon Prizes = challenge prizes (or 'inducement' prizes) which offer a cash reward to whoever can most effectively meet a defined challenge. They act as an incentive for innovation by prescribing the goal, but not how the goal should be achieved.

The European Commission has launched 3 Horizon Prizes in the area of energy which will contribute to the objectives of both the Energy Union and the Strategic Energy Technology (SET) Plan: low carbon energy technologies, greater sustainability and efficiency, increased energy security and decarbonisation of the European economy.

The total budget of the 3 prizes of €3.25 million is funded under Horizon 2020.

  1. The €750.000 Horizon Prize Photovoltaics meets history will award the best architectural and aesthetical design for a photovoltaic energy system combined with the optimal technical solution able to face the constraints in integrating photovoltaic energy sources in historical urban districts. Deadline: 26 September 2018
  2. The €1 million Horizon Prize Low carbon hospital intends to reward solutions integrating several technologies allowing a n uninterruptable 100% renewable energy sources for heat and power generation in hospital buildings. Deadline: 3 April 2019.
  3. The €1.5 million Horizon Prize CO2 reuse will go to the innovative product contributing to net emissions reductions by reusing carbon dioxide (CO2).
