Act for the climate: take the floor

Share your opinion at the citizens engagement event to prepare the coming EU mission for climate adaptation and societal transformations.

The effects of climate change are becoming increasingly visible and far beyond the borders of a region or country. The challenge, of size, requires solutions at multiple levels.

In recent years, many of you have demonstrated our country to call on decision makers to take action in response to the challenges of climate change. You have shown that this affects all of you, men and women, young and old, urban and rural inhabitants, and that climate change is mocking geographical and linguistic boundaries.

Your call didn't go unnoticed. This is illustrated by the new initiative taken by the European Commission in the framework of research and innovation policies: the “missions”.

The missions are large-scale research programmes in which many researchers, companies, public institutions and civil society organisations from different Member States will be involved. They will be responsible for analysing and proposing solutions to major problems facing our society. Adaptation to climate change and societal transformations, of course, are part of this. Within this framework, it will be necessary to seek together to accelerate the transition to a Europe better prepared to face climate change, particularly by transforming our societies.

Call for Citizens

As part of the missions, citizens will be involved at all stages: Definition of priorities, monitoring of implementation, evaluation of results... Your time to speak! To gather your suggestions, several  citizen consultation will be organised in the coming years in each Member State.

The first meeting in Belgium is for very soon:  on Saturday, August 22, 50 citizens representing the diversity of the Belgian population will be drawn by lot among those who have responded to this call. They will be invited to meet online to reflect together on the priorities for research and innovation on adaptation to climate change and the societal transformations it entails.

It will also be a unique opportunity for you to listen to and interact with Jean-Pascal van Ypersele de Strihou and Olivier De Schutter, two leading Belgian experts in this field.

Your recommendations will then be forwarded to the European Commission, which will take them into consideration when planning the missions.

In practice

When? Saturday, August 22 from 9.30 a.m. to 13.30 p.m.

Where?               The meeting will be entirely online in the form of video conferencing. If you do not have an adequate computer or internet connection, you are lent them free of charge and helped you use them.

For whom?        Everyone is welcome: whether you are 18 or 88 years old; whether you spent your life studying or left school at the age of 16; whether you are passionate about climate issues or care about this issue only from afar... We will ensure that the selected people represent the Belgian population in all its diversity.

Language            The event will be organized only in French and Dutch
